Fall 2002 Report
Winnipeg International Airport
The Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) operates the Winnipeg International Airport and has a less understood but important role in the development of the region. As an important economic generator, we lead initiatives that complement the growth of local businesses while reducing the hassle factor for our travellers. An example is our recent success with marketing initiatives and US based carriers. Specifically, United Airlines announced twice daily, non-stop air services to Denver, Colorado. The service will be operated through United's regional partner, Air Wisconsin d/b/a United Express. This new service commenced October 8, 2002 to connect our region with the entire south western United States.
Why is this important? First, our customer value goals are addressed by ensuring business and leisure travellers will have more direct access to markets. Secondly, local companies involved in the film and hospitality/tourism industry have greater opportunity to grow and promote the Winnipeg destination. When we attract these types of services, resulting economic growth extends beyond the traditional. To assure a long relationship with our community, we connected Air Wisconsin with Standard Aero and its recently opened C34 engine repair facility. This long-standing airport tenant and Winnipeg success story is providing innovative opportunities which address carrier needs in a cost effective manner. Air Wisconsin now has a relationship and reason to operate that goes beyond simple passenger economics.
This new repair facility built at the Winnipeg International Airport is the largest airport facility development in recent history. WAA partnered with the City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba to support this new facility focusing on the continued development of the aerospace industry. By partnering with existing airport tenants and neighbours such as the Aerospace industry, WAA leads the community, promotes business growth and creates jobs for our community. Winnipeg International Airport generates over $300 million annually in economic benefits for Manitoba. Airport operations are responsible for creating in excess of 7,200 jobs with over 4,700 jobs directly at the airport.
