Fall 2002 Report
Pillars
As we approach our 125th anniversary in 2004, we are recognizing lawyers who played extraordinary roles in building our history. John A. MacAulay was one of them.
JOHN A. MACAULAY (1892 - 1978)
What
does an art collection have in common with the Red
Cross? Both were passions of John A. MacAulay, a
formidable pillar of our past. The Morden native
obtained his LL.B. from the University of Manitoba
in 1918 while serving in the Canadian Medical Corps.
John MacAulay has been described as a force of personality
and warmth, with a celebrated toughness as a negotiator.
John MacAulay's legal career spanned five decades
at the Firm; he possessed renowned legal expertise
in tax law and for many years managed the Firm with
a strong and steady hand. Often described as ambitious
and acutely perceptive, John MacAulay made an exemplary
public service commitment throughout the 1950's and
60's, most notably as volunteer President of both
the Manitoba and the International Red Cross Associations.
As an avid art collector, John MacAulay's legacy
of strong support in the development and sustenance
of the Winnipeg Art Gallery lives on today in the
more than 50 works he and his family donated to the
Gallery's collection.
